SCCM Technical Preview Build Numbers Version Numbers
This article lists the SCCM Technical Preview build numbers, version numbers, new features, and release dates. Microsoft adds new features to each version of Configuration Manager’s technical preview builds. This is an insight into what’s coming up in the next release of SCCM’s current branch.
There have been many TP releases so far, and in this article we will attempt to keep track of the release history for technical preview builds. Setting up a technical preview in your lab is easy, and you can test out new features before they get added to the upcoming current branch release.
When a new technical preview release is installed, Configuration Manager updates the build number, the version of the console, and the version of the clients. You must always update the client agents to the latest version after installing the latest SCCM technical preview build.
Release Cadence for ConfigMgr Technical Preview
As per the latest SCCM release cadence, there will be four ConfigMgr Technical Preview (TP) releases per year. Two versions will be released before each production SCCM current branch release, and one of the technical preview releases will be a baseline release. (TP baseline is a 180-day evaluation.)
Technical Preview Evaluation
Microsoft allows you to try the SCCM Technical Preview builds for 180 days. The users can test it on their lab setup and provide feedback. To use the technical preview, you must first install a SCCM baseline version of the technical preview build. After you install the technical preview baseline version, use the in-console updates to get the most recent one.
If the ConfigMgr TP version isn’t updated for over 180 days, the TP version will expire. The technical preview lab must be rebuilt if the version has expired.
Note: The SCCM Configuration Manager Technical Preview versions must be tested only in a lab environment. Microsoft will not provide support for SCCM technical preview versions. Therefore, before making any changes, backup your SCCM site.
Download latest version of SCCM Technical Preview
To obtain the latest technical preview build, visit the Microsoft Evaluation Center. You will need to complete a form with your name, organization, country, phone number, and other pertinent information. Once you do that, you will get a download link for the latest technical preview version. Click on the download link to get the Technical Preview zip file and extract it to a folder to get the setup file.
