What are Intune Discovered Apps?

According to Microsoft, Discovered Apps are a list of detected apps on the Intune-enrolled devices in your tenant. It’s like a software inventory of all your managed devices for your Intune tenant. You can locate the discovered apps in the Intune admin center by going to Apps > Monitor > Discovered Apps.

Just like you have Software Inventory in SCCM, Intune lets you find the apps that it has discovered on its managed devices in the form of discovered apps. This data is easily exportable to a .csv file, which is useful for internal auditing.

For personal devices, Intune never collects information on applications that are unmanaged. On corporate devices, any app, whether managed or not, is collected for this report. For this reason, the majority of businesses make sure that Windows device ownership is set to corporate in the Intune admin center.

This is important! Intune provides an aggregated list of detected apps on the Intune-enrolled devices in your tenant. In addition, Intune also provides a list of discovered apps for each individual device in your tenant. In this article, we will go over each report in more detail.

Intune App Discovery Refresh Interval

The app discovery refresh interval in Intune specifies how frequently software inventory data is collected from devices and synchronized with discovered apps in the Intune admin center. Listed below are some critical points related to the Intune app discovery refresh frequency.

  1. The Intune app discovery refreshes every seven days from the time of enrollment (not a weekly refresh for the entire tenant).
  2. The Discovered Apps report is application information collected through the Intune Management Extension for Win32 Apps, which is collected every 24 hours.

The below screenshot is taken from the Microsoft article that provides the app platform type, the apps that are monitored for personal devices, the apps that are monitored for company-owned devices, and the refresh cycle. Notice that for most of the device platforms, the discovered apps are synchronized with Intune every seven days after device enrollment. For Win32 apps, the discovered app reports in Intune are updated every 24 hours.
