In this post, I’ll show you how to upgrade Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise and take advantage of the advanced features tailored for business environments.
Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Enterprise are two editions of Microsoft’s latest operating system, each designed to cater to different user groups. While both share the core functionality of Windows 11, the Enterprise edition includes advanced features tailored for large organizations, offering enhanced security, management, and productivity tools.
Benefits of Upgrading to Windows 11 Enterprise
Upgrading to Windows 11 Enterprise unlocks several advanced features, including:

- Advanced Security: With Enterprise edition, you get access to features like Windows Defender Credential Guard and Windows Hello for Business provide enhanced protection against cyber threats.
- Centralized Management: Tools like Microsoft Endpoint Manager and Group Policy allow IT administrators to manage devices efficiently.
- Virtualization Support: Enterprise users can leverage Windows Virtual Desktop and Hyper-V for virtualization needs.
- Productivity Enhancements: Features like Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Teams integration streamline workflows in organizational settings.
Prerequisites
Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure the following:
- Windows 11 Pro is Installed: Confirm that your current operating system is Windows 11 Pro. You can check this by navigating to: Settings > System > About and looking under “Windows specifications.”
- Windows Enterprise Product Key or License: You need a valid Windows 11 Enterprise product key or access to a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes Windows 11 Enterprise.
- Backup Your Data: Based on my testing, I can confirm that the edition upgrade of Windows 11 process does not delete your files, it is always recommended to back up your important data to avoid any unexpected issues.
- Internet Connection: Ensure your device is connected to the internet to validate the product key and download any required files.
Upgrade Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise
Follow these steps to upgrade Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise.
Step 1: Open Activation Settings
First, sign-in to your Windows 11 PC. Press Win + I to open the Settings app.

Click the System tab on the left panel. Then, select the “Activation” option on the right. You can read the following article to find more about Windows 11 activation methods.

Step 2: Change the Product Key
The System > Activation window shows the installed Windows 11 version along with the activation state. The below screenshot shows the version as Windows 11 Pro and Activation state as Active. Click on the Change button next to Change Product Key.

You may require administrator permission to run the Windows Activation tool. The “Enter a product key” window will then appear. Here, enter your Windows 11 Enterprise product key and click Next.
Tip: The Generic Key for Enterprise Upgrade is : NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43. The generic key will only work if your organization has a valid Microsoft 365 subscription or volume licensing agreement.

Step 3: Activate Windows Enterprise
Click the Activate button to begin the Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise switch. The product key that you entered will be verified with online Microsoft activation servers.

“Windows is activated – We’ve activated this copy of Windows“. This confirms the upgrade from Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise was successful. Close the Windows Activation box.
In case the Windows activation fails, it usually fails with an error code. In most cases, verify if the product key is correct or check the solutions for error code.
Along with the Windows 11 edition upgrade, you will also notice that the edition of Windows 11 is now changed from Pro to Enterprise.

Step 4: Restart the PC and Verify the Edition
You must restart your PC to apply all the Windows 11 Enterprise changes. To verify the edition and OS build number, go to Settings > System > About and check under “Windows specifications” to confirm that your edition is now Windows 11 Enterprise.
The About Windows shows the Windows 11 version, OS build number and Windows 11 Enterprise edition. After you upgrade Windows 11 Pro to Enterprise, the version and OS build number will remain the same.

To downgrade from Windows 11 Enterprise to Windows 11 Pro, you can follow the same process and use a valid product key to switch editions. However, this is uncommon since the Enterprise version of Windows 11 provides the most advanced features among all editions.
