This comprehensive guide covers multiple ways for deploying Slack using Intune. You can use any of these deployment methods to install the Slack app on corporate Windows devices via Intune.

Slack is a channel-based messaging platform similar to Microsoft Teams. With Slack, people can work together more effectively, connect all their software tools and services and find the information that they need to do their best work. This is all within a secure, enterprise-grade environment.

In my previous post, I covered Slack deployment using SCCM. When compared to Configuration Manager, Intune offers more ways to roll out the Slack app. However, your devices must be enrolled in Intune to use any of these deployment methods.

Download Slack MSI Installers

Slack provides two Microsoft MSI installer packages that IT Administrators can use to deploy Slack to Windows computers for multiple users or machines. The two Slack MSI packages are fundamentally different, using different deployment and update mechanisms. Let’s understand the differences between both.

  • Slack MSI Installer for per-user deployment: Adds the Slack installer machine-wide, rather than individually installing Slack for Windows. With this method, Slack gets updates on the devices it is installed on.
  • Slack MSI Installer for machine-wide installation: This installs Slack for Windows machine-wide, either to Program Files or to a location of your choice. With this method, Slack will not receive automatic updates.

Now that you know the differences between the Slack MSI installers, download a Slack Installer that fits your requirements. To download the Slack 64-bit MSI installer for per-user deployment, click the download link and save the SlackSetup.msi installer.

Download MSIX Installer for Slack App

Slack also offers .MSIX installer that can be uploaded to Intune and deployed as a line-of-business app. You can download the latest Slack MSIX installer app by visiting the Slack homepage. Click on the Resources > Download Slack. The Slack.msix installer will be downloaded to your computer by the browser.

Alright, let’s get started with Slack deployment with Intune.

Method 1: Deploy Slack using the Microsoft Store app in Intune

With the integration of MS Store apps in Intune, the admins can browse, deploy, and monitor Microsoft Store applications inside Intune. Many prefer this method because, upon deployment, Intune automatically keeps the apps up to date when a new version becomes available.

Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center. Go to Apps > All Apps. Add a new app by clicking the + Add button. On the Select app type pane, click the drop-down and select Microsoft Store app (new).

Once you’ve selected the Slack app from the MS store, you can now configure the app information for deployment. The best thing about UWP Store apps is that most of the details are already filled in from the app, so there’s not much you need to change.

You can configure a logo for the Slack app and choose to display it as a featured app in the company portal. Read how to display featured apps in the Intune company portal for more information.

If there are no changes required, click Next.

Method 4: Install Slack as Win32 app with Intune

You can deploy Slack as Win32 app with Intune. This method should be used when any of the above three methods aren’t available for your organization.

The procedure for creating the Slack Win32 app includes downloading the Win32 Content Prep tool and converting the Slack EXE installer to Win32 app. Once that is done, you’ll need to upload the Slack Win32 app to Intune and specify the installation, uninstall commands and define a detection method. Finally, assign the app to groups for deployment.

If you are new to creating Win32 apps, here is an in-depth guide covering about installing Win32 apps with Intune.

Syncing the Intune Policies

After you use Intune to deploy the Slack app to specific groups, you must wait for the deployment to take effect. The devices will get the app when they check in with the Intune service. You can also force sync Intune policies on your computers in case you don’t find the Slack app listed in the company portal or installed on the devices. Monitoring the Slack App deployment in Intune

After deploying the Slack app via, you can monitor the overall deployment to find out how many users/devices had successful installation of apps and how many failed or were not installed. It is important to ensure the deployments are successful.

In the Intune admin center, go to Apps > All Apps. Select the Slack app from the list and on the Overview blade, you can monitor how many users or devices have successfully installed the newly deployed Slack app.

Verify Slack App Installation on Computers

Once the devices have retrieved the latest policies and updates from Intune, it’s time to check if the Slack app is installed on these devices. Sign in to one of the Windows 11 devices and launch the Company Portal app.

If the Slack app was deployed as Available, it should be available in the Company Portal for installation. Users can select the app and click on the Install button.

If the Slack app was assigned as required, the app should have installed on the device. End users can verify the installation of the app by clicking on the Start button and typing ‘Slack‘ in the search box. The app appears in the search results if it is installed. To launch the app, click Open. On Windows 11, the Slack app also appears in the Apps > Apps & Features > Apps list.
