In this post, I’ll show you how to deploy Inkscape with Intune using multiple deployment options that include LOB app, UWP app, and the enterprise app catalog (Win32 app).
Inkscape is a free, open-source vector graphics editor that works on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows desktop computers. It is widely used for creating and editing scalable vector graphics (SVG) files. It allows you to create a variety of graphics such as logos, business cards, fliers, badges, letterheads, and more.
Download Inkscape MSI Installer
Inkscape software is available for multiple platforms that include Windows, macOS, and Linux. Windows 11 PC users can manually install Inkscape directly from the Microsoft Store.
For enterprise deployments (SCCM and Intune), Inkscape offers both EXE and MSI installers. You can download any installer you want, but I suggest using the MSI installer because it makes deployment much simpler than the EXE installer.
To download the latest version of Inkscape, visit the website and navigate to the Windows downloads. The website will present you with various options to download the installer. Select the Inkscape Windows installer package (.msi package) and save the installer to your computer.
Deploy Inkscape as an LOB app
Inkscape provides an MSI installer, so you can download it and add it to Intune as a line-of-business app. The MSI approach is much easier than using the executable file for deployment.
In the Intune admin center, go to Apps > Windows and click on the Add button. In the Select app type pane, click the drop-down and select Line-of-business app.
On the App package file pane, click the browse button. Then, select an Inkscape Windows installation file with the extension .msi. The app details are displayed. Select OK on the app package file pane to add the app.
Some app details are prepopulated from the uploaded Inkscape MSI installer. You must specify the publisher details here. Once you’ve done that, click Next.
In the Assignments section, you have to choose your groups for Inkscape deployment. Select one of the options that include: Required, Available for enrolled devices, or Uninstall group assignments for the app. Click Next.
On the Review + create page, review the values and settings that you entered for the app. Click on Create to upload the app to Intune. The Overview pane for the Inkscape LOB app appears, showing the app deployment information.
Deploy Inkscape as a UWP app
As mentioned earlier, the Inkscape app is available in the Microsoft Store for installation. Intune administrators can use the new MS Store app deployment method for Inkscape installation. In one of my previous posts, I covered how to deploy Microsoft Store apps using Intune. I will be using the same procedure here.
To add the Inkscape UWP app to Intune, use these steps:
- Sign in to the Intune Admin Portal.
- Select Apps > All apps > Add.
- In the select app type pane, choose Microsoft Store app (new).
On the App information tab, click Search the Microsoft Store app (new). In the search box, type ‘Inkscape‘ and press the enter key. From the search results, select the Inkscape UWP app and click Select.
From the below screenshot, we see most of the app details are already populated, so there’s not much you need to change. Click Next.
Assign the Inkscape deployment to your desired groups. Once you have finalized the assignments, click Next.
Review the final configuration for the Inkscape app deployment. When you are done, click Create. The Inkscape app is now added to Intune and is available under All Apps.
Deploy Inkscape as a Win32 app (Enterprise App Catalog)
The Enterprise App Catalog is a collection of prepackaged Win32 apps that have been designed and prepared by Microsoft to support Intune. If you are looking to deploy Inkscape for your enterprise users as a Win32 app, this section covers the steps.
In the Intune admin center, navigate to Apps > Windows, and on the Windows app page, click on Add. In the select app type pane, click the drop-down and select the Enterprise App Catalog app.
Select Search the Enterprise App Catalog from the App information step. Find and select the Inkscape app name, then select Next.
Select the app package based on name, language, architecture, and version. Click the Select button to update the app information step.
Now you’ll see that Inkscape app details will be populated into appropriate fields. Most of the details are preconfigured. You may specify a logo for the Inkscape app if you wish to display it for users in the company portal. Click Next.
On the Program page, you’ll notice that the installation and uninstall commands are already populated for the Inkscape deployment. Changing the installation commands might cause the app installation to fail. Click Next.
Inkscape install command: "%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /i "inkscape-1.4_2024-10-11_86a8ad7-x64.msi" /qn
Inkscape uninstall command: "%SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe" /X {4E9A1766-6BA4-4015-BA8D-05A268638587} /qn
On the Requirements step, specify the requirements that devices must meet before the app is installed. The mandatory requirements that you need to choose are OS architecture and minimum OS version. Configure these based on your requirements and click Next.
The Detection Rules step already has three pre-populated rules for detecting the Inkscape app on Windows devices. Nothing much to change here; click Next.
Configure the assignments and select either Required, Available for enrolled devices, or Uninstall group assignments for the Inkscape app deployment.
Review the values and settings that you entered for the app. Verify that you configured the app information correctly. Click on Add app to add the app to Intune. The Overview pane for the Inkscape Win32 app appears, showing the app deployment information.
Monitoring the Inkscape deployment in Intune
No matter what method you’ve selected to deploy the Inkscape app using Intune, monitoring the app installation is a critical step. Especially for enterprise deployment, the app needs to be installed on intended devices or users.
In the Intune admin center, go to Apps > All apps. Enter the app name in the search box and select it. The app Overview blade shows the users or devices that have successfully installed the Inkscape app.
For example, the screenshot below shows that the Inkscape app was successfully deployed on three of our devices with no failures.
If the Inkscape app deployment has not been initiated on any of your devices, it’s worth synchronizing Intune policies on these devices. If the Inkscape app installation is experiencing failures, such as error code 0x87D300C9, you must begin your troubleshooting by reviewing the Intune logs.
Verify the Inkscape app installation
End users can verify the installation of the app by clicking on the Start button and typing ‘Inkscape‘ in the search box. The app appears in the search results if it is installed. To launch the app, click Open. On Windows 11, the Inkscape app also appears in the Apps > Apps & Features > Apps list.
