In this guide, I will show you how to deploy ChatGPT app with Intune for Windows devices. The ChatGPT app by OpenAI is now available in the Microsoft Store as a UWP app, making it easier to install it with MS Intune.
The Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an AI model that is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.
Everyone can use the free version of ChatGPT, which can be accessed through the browser or the Windows app. The app is better overall, and it eliminates the need to sign in every time you use ChatGPT, unlike the browser version.
In October 2024, OpenAI announced their official ChatGPT app for Windows. The official ChatGPT desktop app comes with the latest model improvements from OpenAI.
Windows users can manually install the ChatGPT app from the Microsoft Store but when you want to mass-deploy this app to multiple users, Intune makes your task easier.
In my earlier guide, I explained how easy it is to deploy MS Store apps with Intune. All you have to do is add an app from the Microsoft Store and assign it to the user groups. The same procedure will be used in this guide for ChatGPT app deployment with Intune.
Deploy ChatGPT App with Intune
Let’s begin by adding the ChatGPT UWP app from the Microsoft Store to Intune. Sign in to the Intune admin center. In the admin portal, go to Apps > All apps > Add. In the Select app type pane, click the drop-down for App type and select Microsoft Store app (new).
On the App Information tab, click “Search the Microsoft Store app (new)“. In the search box, type ‘chatgpt‘ and press the enter key. From the search results, select the ChatGPT UWP app by OpenAI and click Select.
Note: It is important to check if the app exists in the Microsoft Store before you plan to add it to Intune. If the app is not available in your region, it may not show up in the search. For instance, the ChatGPT app may not be available for some regions. In such cases, you cannot deploy the app, and you’ll have to wait for the app to appear in the store.
What I love about deploying UWP Store apps is that most of the details are already filled in from the app, so there is not much you need to change. In the screenshot below, we see that the ChatGPT app is preconfigured with the name, description, and publisher information.
You can set an optional logo for the ChatGPT app, and this logo appears along with the application in the company portal app for users.
Once you have configured the app information, click Next.
In this step, choose the user groups to assign the ChatGPT app for installation. Once you have finalized the assignments, click Next.
Review the configuration for the ChatGPT app deployment. When you are done, click Create.
Next, you see a notification confirming the ChatGPT application has been created successfully. The ChatGPT app is now assigned to the selected user groups for installation. Meanwhile, to speed up the policy retrieval on endpoints, you can run a manual sync of Intune policies.
Monitor ChatGPT app deployment in Intune
In this step, I will explain how you can monitor the ChatGPT app deployment to find out how many users/devices had successful installation and how many failed or were not installed.
For any organization, it is important to ensure the rollouts are successful. From the list of apps, select the ChatGPT app and on the Overview blade, you can find out the total users/devices that have successfully received the app.
In the screenshot below, you can see the ChatGPT deployment is successful for all the users.
Verify ChatGPT app installation
To confirm if the ChatGPT app installation is successful for users, sign in to one of the Windows devices. Click Start and type “ChatGPT,” and the app appears in the search results. To launch the app, click Open.
On Windows 11, you can open the ChatGPT by going to Apps > Apps & Features > Apps list.
When you launch the ChatGPT app for the first time, you’ll have to log in to access your data.
