Enable Windows 11 24H2 updates in WSUS and SCCM
In this post, I will show you how to enable Windows 11 24H2 updates in WSUS and SCCM. Microsoft has released Windows 11 update 24H2, and you can now push this new update to older and supported versions of Windows 11.
Although Microsoft has announced that WSUS is deprecated, organizations that still rely on WSUS can distribute the Windows 11 24H2 updates to their client machines.
The Windows 11 24H2 updates should also be delivered via other options, which include Microsoft Configuration Manager, Intune, Autopatch etc. I will be covering more about the in-place upgrade options to 24H2 in the upcoming posts.
Enable Windows 11 24H2 updates in WSUS
If you use standalone WSUS to manage and deploy updates in your setup, you can enable the updates for Windows 11 24H2. Every new product that Microsoft releases requires the completion of this step, which is a one-time procedure.
Start by launching the WSUS admin console on the Windows Server. Choose your WSUS server and click on Options. On the right-hand side, select Products and Classifications. In the Products tab, locate Windows 11 and enable it.
Along with Windows 11, the two other products related to Windows 11 24H2 include:
- Windows 11 Client, version 24H2 and later, Servicing Drivers
- Windows 11 Client, version 24H2 and later, Upgrade & Servicing Drivers
Enabling the above options is not mandatory. Click on Apply and OK.
Once you have enabled the updates for Windows 11 version 24H2, your next step is to synchronize the updates. In the WSUS console, select Synchronizations and under the Actions menu, select Synchronize Now. This will force WSUS to check the latest updates for the products that you have enabled.
Wait for the sync to complete and once that is done, you can verify if Windows 11 24H2 updates appear in the WSUS console. To verify, right-click All Updates and select Search. In the search box, type “Windows 11 version 24H2” and click Find Now. The WSUS lists all the Windows 24H2 updates.
Enable Windows 11 24H2 Updates in SCCM
If you have been deploying Windows updates with SCCM, you can enable the Windows 11 product under the Software Update Point role properties and get the latest updates for Windows 11 24H2.
Since Configuration Manager relies on WSUS for retrieving the updates, you should avoid making product selections in the WSUS. That’s not the right approach, and it causes sync issues between ConfigMgr and WSUS.
If you have previously enabled the Windows 11 product in the SUP, you don’t need to make any changes. The updates for Windows 11 version 24H2 should appear in the Configuration Manager.
Here is how you can enable Windows 11 24H2 updates in SCCM:
- Launch the Configuration Manager console.
- Go to Administration\Overview\Site Configuration\Sites.
- Select the site and go to Software Update Point properties.
- Select the Products tab and enable Windows 11 products. Click Apply and OK.
After performing the above steps, the Configuration Manager console may not show the 24H2 updates. That’s because you haven’t performed the SUP sync yet. Do so by manually running the software update point synchronization. Once the sync is complete, the SCCM console shows the Windows 11 24H2 updates for deployment.
Tip: Review the wsyncmgr.log file to troubleshoot issues where 24H2 product updates don’t appear in the Configuration Manager console.
