In this article, I will show you how to disable News and Interests using Intune (MEM). Using Settings Catalog in Intune, you can turn off or disable News and Interests widget on taskbar.
The news and interests in Windows 10 offers a quick overview of key headlines and weather information relevant to you. The news and interests is located on taskbar.
According to Microsoft, you get quick access to an integrated feed of dynamic content such as news and weather that updates throughout the day.
On the task bar, you can also see a local weather forecast for the day with News and interests. Hovering the News and Interests icon pulls up a window that shows a lot of information at one glance.
If you don’t like to see the News and Interests on your Windows 10 taskbar, you can turn off using Intune.
In one of my post, I showed 3 ways to disable Windows 10 News and Interests feature namely.
- Manually remove the News and Interests from Windows 10 Taskbar
- Remove News and Interests via Registry
- Turn off News and Interests via Group Policy
Disable News and Interests Using Intune (MEM)
Let’s disable News and Interests using Intune (Microsoft Endpoint Manager)
- Launch your browser and go to Intune Portal (MEM admin center).
- Navigate to Devices > Windows > Configuration Profiles.
- Select + Create Profile to create a configuration profile to turn off News and Interests.
On the Create a profile window, select Platform as Windows 10 and later and Profile Type as Settings Catalog. Click Create.
On the Basics section, specify the name of the Configuration Profile – Remove News and Interests from taskbar. You may also specify a brief description about the profile. Click Next.
On the Configuration Settings section, select + Add Settings.
This brings up the Settings Picker window where you need to select the appropriate setting. In the search box, type news and interests and click Search. From the search results, select Feeds and ensure the setting name is Enable News and Interests.
To disable News and Interests, you must select Enable News and Interest setting to Not Allowed. This completely turns off the news and interest widget on the taskbar of Windows 10 computer. Click Next.
On the Assignments section, select the groups that you want to target the configuration settings. In my case, I am selecting a test devices group that contains few devices that I use for initial testing. Based on your requirements, include the groups and click Next.
On the final screen, that is Review + Create, review the settings once and click Create.
In the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center, select Configuration Profiles. Now you can see the setting catalog profile that we just created to disable news and interests.
Wait for few minutes while the Configuration Settings are deployed to the groups. To monitor the settings catalog profile deployment, select the configuration profile.
Under Device and user check-in status, the succeeded count is 1. Click View report to see the devices that has successfully received the Configuration profile.
One thing that noticed was when I deployed the configuration profile, I did not see any changes even though I saw the settings were deployed. The trick was to log off from the device and log in back and only then I could see the news and interests widget was removed from taskbar.
