In this post, I will show you how to configure multiple display mode using Intune. Starting in the Intune service release 2501, Microsoft has introduced a new setting in the Windows settings catalog that lets you set a preferred display mode for Windows 24H2.
The Configure Multiple Display Mode policy setting allows monitors to extend or clone the display by default, facilitating the need for manual setup. It streamlines the multi-monitor configuration process, ensuring a consistent and user-friendly experience.
The ability to multitask and increase productivity is why many people utilize dual monitors at work. It is possible to have numerous windows open at once, each containing an application, document, or website.

When you connect dual or multiple monitors to your Windows PC or laptop, Windows automatically detects the monitor and displays the desktop screen. Instead of manually configuring the display modes for monitors, Intune can make it easy to set up a preferred display mode configuration for your Windows users. Windows 365 also allows Cloud PC users to use multiple monitors during the session.
Preferred display modes
When you set up a policy for the multiple display mode via Intune, you’ll have to select a display arrangement option, and the options include:
- Clone
- Extend
- Internal Only
- External Only
- Default

Intune Policy to Configure Multiple Display Mode
Let’s create a policy in Intune to configure multiple display mode for Windows 11 users. Sign in to the Intune admin center and go to Devices > Windows > Manage Devices > Configuration. Under Policies, click Create > New Policy. Choose Windows 10 and later as the platform and Settings Catalog as the profile type. Click Create.

On the Basics tab, enter the name of the profile and provide a policy description. The following details are specified in the below screenshot:
- Name: Set up multiple display modes with Intune
- Description: A setting that allows monitors to extend or clone the display
Click Next.

In the Configuration Settings section, under Settings Catalog, click Add Settings. In the Settings picker window, type “multiple display mode” in the search box and click Search.
From the search results, select the category Display. In the bottom pane, select the setting “Configure Multiple Display Mode.” Close the settings picker window.

Click the drop-down next to configure multiple display mode setting, and select your preferred display mode. In the below example, I have selected multiple display mode as Extend which changes the default multiple screen setup to extend. Click Next.

In the scope tags section, you specify scope tags. Specifying scope tags is optional, and you may skip this step. Click Next. In the Assignments window, select the Entra user groups to which you want to assign this policy. Select Next.

On the Review + Create page, review all the settings that you have configured for Windows multiple display mode settings via Intune and select Create.

After you create the above configuration policy in Intune, a notification appears: “Policy created successfully.” This confirms that the policy has been created and is being applied to the groups we chose. The profile we created can be found in the configuration profiles section of the admin center.
Update Intune Policies
If you’re testing this policy on a set of pilot devices to confirm its working, you can manually sync the policies on these devices with Intune. This will speed up things and ensure the devices will immediately obtain the latest policies, configurations, and updates from Intune.
Monitor the policy assignments
To monitor the multiple display mode policy assignments in Intune, select the policy and review the Device and user check-in status. Here you should find the count of devices or users that have successfully received the policy settings.
Furthermore, you can click View Report to see the names of devices or users that have successfully received the configuration profile. In some cases, the policy may fail to apply to certain devices or users. To resolve the issues, you will need to troubleshoot the issue by reviewing Intune logs on Windows computers.
During this policy deployment, I noticed error 65000 for some devices. This error code is generated when your current Windows device doesn’t accept the policy settings, or you’ve set something wrong in the policy itself. I believe this error occurred on the devices that did not have dual monitors connected to them.
End-User Experience
Let’s check if the multiple display mode settings have been applied to Windows devices. Sign in to the Windows devices on which you have assigned this policy. Select Start > Settings > System > Display. · Scroll down and select Multiple displays to expand that section. Here you should see the display arrangement option configured as per your Intune policy.
