New SCCM Software Update Icons and Description

In this post, we will look at SCCM software update icons and their description. The icons used for software updates in Configuration Manager are distinctive and have a specific meaning. We will go through each of these icons in this article.

Synchronized software updates are displayed in the Configuration Manager console, and the first column for each software update contains an icon that indicates a specific state. Software update groups are also represented with an icon that provides information about the state of the software updates contained in the group.

Most of the components in Configuration Manager have assigned icons, which you’ll notice when you install it. Since a long time ago, the majority of the icons haven’t been updated. Microsoft needs to spend some time updating these icons, which will go well with SCCM console’s dark mode.

If you have deployed Software Updates using SCCM, you can identify the update type based on the icon. Let’s take a look at software update icons and understand what each icon represents.

The software update icons and their descriptions are listed in the table below.

SCCM Software Update Icon	Software Update Icon Description
	The icon with the green arrow represents a normal software update. This icon represents an update that has been synchronized and is ready for deployment.
	The icon with the black X represents an expired software update. Once a software update is expired, new deployments can no longer be created for the software updates. Expired software updates are removed from active deployments and will no longer be made available to clients.
	The icon with the yellow star represents a superseded software update. Superseded software updates have been replaced with newer versions of the software update.
	The icon with the red X represents an invalid software update. Invalid software updates are in an active deployment, but for some reason the content (software update files) isn’t available.
	The icon with the blue arrow represents a metadata-only software update. Metadata-only software updates are available in the Configuration Manager console for reporting. You can’t deploy or download metadata-only software updates because a software update file isn’t associated with the software updates metadata.
