Enable or Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling
In this article, I will show you how to enable or disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows 11. When you enable this feature in Windows 11, it enables more efficient GPU scheduling between applications.
The purpose of this article is to give some background on GPU scheduling feature and show the steps to enable the hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on Windows 11.
With “Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling“, Windows 11 can now offload most of GPU scheduling to a dedicated GPU-based scheduling processor. With GPU scheduling enabled, your GPU takes the load off the processor and reduces latency, potentially making your PC run faster. If you enable this feature, the performance of applications that rely on the graphic card improves significantly.
Note: The Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling is an optional feature, and it is not enabled by default. This feature must be enabled manually on Windows 11 or Windows 10. Enabling this feature will require a computer restart.
GPU Support for Hardware Scheduling
You may want to know which GPUs will support Hardware Scheduling? According to Microsoft, The new GPU scheduler will be supported on recent GPUs that have the necessary hardware, combined with a WDDMv2.7 driver that exposes this support to Windows.
There is no specific list of GPUs that Microsoft provides for hardware scheduling. However, as Microsoft says, newer GPU’s will support hardware scheduling.
Enable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling
To enable hardware accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows 11, follow the steps below.
1. Click on the Windows 11 Start button and select Settings.
2. On the Settings page, click on the System section and in the right pane, click on the Display option, as shown in the screenshot below.
3. On the Display settings window, scroll down and click on the Graphics option under the Related settings.
4. On the Graphics window, under Default Settings, click Change default graphics settings.
5. To enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, toggle the switch to On. Then, at the confirmation prompt, click on the Yes button.
That was super easy. This will enable hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling on Windows 11. Make sure to restart your computer to apply the changes.
Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling?
Here’s how you can turn off the hardware accelerated GPU scheduling. In the Settings window, choose System. Navigate to the Display tab on the left sidebar. Scroll down and click on the Graphics Settings link. Under the graphics settings, locate and toggle off the switch for hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
Hardware accelerated GPU Scheduling option missing?
There are two reasons why hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling doesn’t appear in the Windows operating system:
- Outdated GPU Driver: If you are running an older version of GPU drivers, the HAGS option doesn’t appear. To resolve this issue, update your GPU drivers.
- Incompatible GPU: If your GPU is incompatible with the current motherboard, you may not see the Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling option.
