In this tutorial, I will show you how to deploy Android Studio using Intune for Mac devices. The latest version of Android studio DMG app can be packaged in Intune and deployed to enrolled macOS devices.
Android Studio is the preferred integrated development environment (IDE) for the development of Android applications. It is developed by Google and is based on IntelliJ IDEA, a popular Java IDE by JetBrains. Android Studio provides tools and features specifically designed to make Android app development faster and more efficient.
During a recent Intune consultation, I was asked if Android Studio could be installed to a group of developers who primarily use Macs for their daily tasks. Fortunately, Android Studio is available as a DMG package for macOS and can be seamlessly distributed via Intune.

Deploy Android Studio using Intune for Mac Devices
Let’s go through the steps for installing Android Studio on enrolled macOS devices using Intune.
Step 1: Download Android Studio for Mac
Open the browser and visit the Android Studio downloads page. The Studio is available for different platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS. Download the Android Studio .dmg package for mac devices. Save this installer to a folder on your computer. We will upload it to Intune in the next step.

Step 2: Upload Android Studio DMG file to Intune
Sign in to the Intune admin center. Go to Apps > macOS apps and create a new macOS app (DMG) and click the Select button.

Click on Select app package file link and upload the android-studio-mac.dmg file. The total size of the package is populated and shown on the screen.

Step 3: App Information and Requirements
In the App Information page, add the details such as name, description, publisher, etc. for the Android Studio DMG app. Depending on the app that you chose, some values in this pane might be automatically filled in. Optionally, you can add a logo for this app. Click Next.

On the Requirements tab, click the drop-down and select the minimum operating system required to install the Studio app. This should be carefully configured based on the macOS versions that are currently used in your organization. Click Next.

Step 4: Configure Detection Rules
The detection rules control how an app installation on a managed macOS device is detected. For Android Studio deployment on Mac, the following detection rules are configured.
- Ignore app version: Select Yes to install the app if it is not already installed on the device. This will only look for the presence of the app bundle ID. For apps that have an auto-update mechanism, select Yes. Select No to install the app when it is not already installed on the device, or if the deploying app’s version number does not match the version that’s already installed on the device.
- App bundle ID (CFBundleIdentifier): com.google.android.studio
- App Version (CFBundleShortVersionString): 2024.3
Note: Read this guide to learn how to check the app bundle identifiers and version numbers to detect the presence of the macOS DMG app on the device.

Step 5: Assign and Create App
On the Assignments tab, select and add the Mac groups to whom you want to target the Studio application. I recommend creating a pilot device group consisting of macOS devices to test the deployment. Once you find the deployments successful, you can then expand it to a larger group. Click Next to display the Review + Create page.

Review the values and settings you entered for the app. When you are done, click Create to add the app to Intune. The Overview pane shows the Android Studio app that you created.

Step 6: Sync Mac devices with Intune
After you deploy Android Studio using Intune, you must wait for the deployment to apply to the targeted groups, and once the devices check in with the Intune service, they will receive the application.
To speed your application deployment, you can manually sync macOS devices with Intune. This will make it possible for devices to quickly sync their policies with Intune.
Step 7: Monitor Android Studio deployment
In the Intune admin center, the app Monitoring section shows the number of Mac users or devices that have successfully received the Android Studio application. To check the deployment status of an app in Intune, use these steps:
- Sign in to the Intune admin center.
- Navigate to Apps > macOS > macOS Apps.
- Select the Android Studio app to monitor its deployment.
The screenshot below confirms the successful installation of the Android Studio app on devices. In case of deployment errors, the error code can help with troubleshooting issues in Intune. For deployment failures on macOS, be sure to review the Intune logs for further insights.
