In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to reset the health for a monitor in SCOM. The alerts are useful in identifying any ongoing or upcoming issues in your setup.

In SCOM, an alert can be generated by a monitor or a rule, which can be identified by adding the ‘Alert Source‘ column in the OpsMgr console. To differentiate, an alert is a notification of a detected problem, while a monitor tracks the availability and performance of systems. Before taking any action based on an alert, make sure you fully understand it.

As per Microsoft, you must reset health for a monitor when you’re sure that all the issues have been resolved. When you manually reset a monitor’s health, it may take a few minutes and may not be immediately reflected in Health Explorer.

Monitors generated in the SCOM console have a specific color for each type. For example, critical objects are represented by a red icon, warnings by a yellow icon, and healthy by a green icon. SCOM admins can configure a monitor to generate an alert when a state change occurs.

If the health state of the monitor changes to red, and you resolve the alert, you must also reset the health state. If the monitor isn’t reset, the same condition that triggered an alert can occur again, but no alert will be generated because the health state hasn’t changed.

Here’s how you reset the health state of a monitor in SCOM:

In the Monitoring workspace of the SCOM console, right-click an alert, select Open and then select Health Explorer.

If you are unable to reset the monitors in SCOM, check the following solutions:

  1. Check if the logged-in user account has permissions to reset the health of the monitor.
  2. Some monitors may not be able to have their health reset. That’s because most monitors do not come with ‘On Demand Detection,’ which is required to reset a monitor’s health.
