Turn On or Enable Dark Mode in Gmail Mobile App

Finally Google is rolling out a dark mode for its Gmail app on both Android and iOS devices. You can turn on or enable the dark mode (also called as dark theme) via Gmail app settings. Read more about this announcement here.

In the recent years, Dark modes have become very popular. This is because the dark theme helps in reducing the strain on your eyes. Another advantage is that it saves your device’s battery life.

Hence in the coming days, we shall see a lot of apps supporting the dark theme. By default your Gmail app may not display dark theme. If you have set dark theme as system default on your device, the Gmail app will automatically respect the system settings.

Enable Dark Mode in Gmail on Android

Here’s how you quickly enable the dark mode (dark theme) in Gmail mobile app. The below steps are applicable for Gmail app on Android phones.

  • Launch the Gmail app on your phone.
  • Tap the hamburger menu in the top left corner.
  • Scroll down and Tap Settings.
  • Tap General settings.
  • At the top, tap Theme.
  • Tap Dark and that enables dark mode.

Under General Settings, tap Theme.

You will see the Theme selection – Light, Dark or System Default. To enable dark theme, tap Dark.

Note – In addition to the above settings, if your device is running Android 10, you can set dark theme as the system default on your device. When you do that then all supported apps that adopt the default system will automatically display the dark theme.

Enable Gmail Dark Mode on iOS

Like Android phone, on your iOS 13 device, you can use the new system-wide dark appearance. You can go to Settings, then Display & Brightness and then tap Dark. When you do this, Gmail by default will apply the dark mode or theme once you update the app.

If you haven’t enabled the system-wide dark appearance on iOS 13 device, you can still enable the Gmail dark mode using the below steps.

  • In the Gmail app, tap the hamburger menu in the top left.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the list, and tap Settings.
  • Tap Theme.
  • Tap Dark to apply dark theme.
